I can never make my mind up about Madonna. Is she a cynical player of the fame game or an artist with a serious message? What I do know is that she was talking rubbish this week on her tour of Japan.

The pointy-chested one was giving out to the Tokyo press about being labelled controversial. "As soon as you have an opinion that is outside what is considered the conventional way of thinking, you're considered controversial," she said.

"I like to ask questions. I like to challenge authority, and a lot of people perceive that as controversial."

Yes, well, they would, wouldn't they, because that's what controversial …
