CANBERRA, Dec 7 Asia Pulse - The government is resisting calls to widen an inquiry to examine the role of Australian trade officials in the UN oil-for-food scandal embroiling wheat exporter AWB (ASX:AWB).

Labor wants the terms of reference for the inquiry rewritten to include the actions or knowledge of the government relating to deals which saw Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein pocket A$300 million (US$225.78 million) from AWB under the now discredited oil-for-food program.

Prime Minister John Howard yesterday confirmed that staff from the former Australian Wheat Board were joined by Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) officers to help secure wheat…
