Toray Industries Inc says it has developed a kind of all-purpose plastic that is transparent and also boasts strong resistance to chemicals, heat and impacts.

The company created the plastic by mixing polycarbonate, which is clear and has excellent impact resistance, together with polybutylene terephthalate (PBT), which has excellent resistance to chemicals such as gasoline and engine antifreeze.

Normally, it is difficult to retain all of the advantageous qualities of two plastics when they are mixed together, but Toray says it has solved the problem with a proprietary mixing technology that involves a special additive and self-organization at the nano-level.
