People of African or Caribbean origin have lived in Britain for some centuries. With the growth of the British Empire, first explorers and then governors brought back, along with such exotic produce as tobacco and potatoes, a few people native to the lands introduced into the British political orbit.

When Victoria became queen in 1837, slavery was in the process of being abolished in the British West Indies. For much of the nineteenth century the visual arts incorporated depictions of black people that fell into various categories. Some were merely for curiosity value.
