After years of sexual scandals, rapes and abuse of female cadets at the academy, Air Force leaders have chosen one of their first women graduates as the new commandant.
Col. Susan Desjardins is now the commander of the 437th Airlift Wing in Charleston SC, where she oversees the military training of 4,000 cadets and leads a staff of 900.
Desjardins graduated from the Air Force Academy in the 1980 class that was the first to include women. Only 97, or 62% of the 156 women in the first class graduated.
