In August, the unthinkable happened. A major American city was all but washed away. Readers will know that Julia Reed has her home in New Orleans, and I am very proud to be able to bring you her testimony of her return to the scene of devastation. Although her house in the Garden District was spared, Reed found herself homeless in a wider sense and enraged on behalf of her community. I think hers is a very important piece that speaks to the perennial problem of how to keep going in the face of disaster.
Nearly 20 years ago, the fashion community was struck hard by the disaster of AIDS. We responded quickly and with determination and optimism. Kenneth Cole, Donna Karan, and Blaine Trump led the way. 7th on Sale, the world's most desirable sample sale, first held in 1990, was one initiative that worked especially well. We did it until 1995, after which other programs and causes demanded attention.
