Somebody was saying the other day, 'Oh, what a great story,' " recalls Natalie Chanin. "It's not really a story. It's these people's lives."
By "people" Chanin means the 150-plus artisans in and around her native Florence, Alabama, who make a living creating the clothes she designs under the label Project Alabama. The seamstresses use down-home quilting and sewing techniques, embroidering fitted fifties frocks, doing patchwork on a-line coats. This, Chanin says, is "contemporary design rooted in tradition."
