TSA Lines To Extend Surcharge: Trans-Pacific carriers say they'll extend their peak-season surcharge for U.S. containerized imports through Jan. 31 on all-water shipments to the East Coast. The peak-season surcharge, $400 per FEU, was scheduled to run from June 15 through Nov. 30 this year, but increased carrier costs and strong vessel-utilization rates warrant an extension of the surcharge on all-water routes, the Transpacific Stabilization Agreement said. The TSA said all-water services to the East Coast are expected to operate full through early 2006, and that they entail higher round-trip sailing costs than port-to-port or intermodal West Coast service.
