A NEW intermodal rail-sea freight service connecting Italy and Spain opened for business this week, with the partners in the operation describing it as a model for future co-operation in developing sustainable alternatives to road transport in Europe.
Maritime and Rail Italy Spain connection, or Maris, will route containers between northern Italy and the Iberian peninsula, with the Grimaldi Group supplying a thrice-weekly sea connection through its existing service between Livorno and Valencia.
Trenitalia, through its intermodal division Italcontainer, will run weekly block trains through Piacenza, Modena, Bologna and Padova, connecting with Grimaldi vessels at the Terminal Darsena Toscana marine facility in Livorno.
The frequency of the Italian rail service will increase to three trains a week once the start-up period has been completed. Rail connections from Valencia into the Iberian peninsula, meanwhile, will be handled by Spanish operator Servilog.
