GERMAN shipbroker Mentz, Decker ' Co is opening a branch in Singapore, the first overseas office in the firm's 109-year history, writes Janet Porter.
A local staff of three will be backed up by a rotation of brokers from Hamburg as the business grows.
Although shipbrokers in London and Copenhagen have been establishing international networks with some, such as Howe Robinson, even setting up in Hamburg, Mentz, Decker is one of the first independent German brokers to expand abroad.
'This is a very important move for us, and reflects the unquestionable importance of Asia,' said Oliver Ahrens, managing director of Mentz, Decker.
The firm already works closely with local charterers, and wants to develop these accounts as well as building up new relationships in this fast-growing part of the world.
