IRISH Ferries has applied to reflag some of its fleet to Cyprus, while the crew dispute that immobilised four of its vessels yesterday dragged on into its sixth day.

Meanwhile, there are unconfirmed reports that exporters in the south of the country frustrated at their inability to move goods have chartered a vessel for a cross from Cork to Cherbourg next week.

Word of the reflagging attempt was confirmed by Sergios Sergiou, head of Cyprus's flag of convenience registry.

'We have had the application for a few weeks now,' he said. 'They applied to us because they are having some problems in Ireland.'

The move will go ahead immediately once necessary documents have been received, he added.
