THE European Maritime Safety Agency will beef up its Mediterranean presence with the launch of a new tender for oil spill response vessels next year.
The agency, which is relocating from Brussels to Lisbon, is looking to cover the east and the west of the Mediterranean with separate capacity, said executive director Willem de Ruiter.
'At the moment we are going to have the one vessel based right in the middle of the Mediterranean in Malta; no-one could complain about the choice of location,' said Mr de Ruiter. 'But ideally we would like better coverage of both the east and the west Mediterranean.'
Details of the new tender came as Emsa announced the winners of its first oil spill contracts: France's Louis Dreyfus Armateurs, Finland-based Lamor Corporation and Malta-based Tankship.
The three companies will provide standby cover for the Atlantic and Channel approach (Dreyfus) the Baltic (Lamor) and the Mediterranean (Tankship) from March next year using a variety of ships: a bunker vessel, a cable layer and small tankers.
