It was interesting to see the Medical Defence Union and the Medical Protection Society continuing to debate over who provides the best indemnity for doctors and dentists ('Medical row over indemnity insurance', PM, 17 November, p2).
There is no doubt that both have effective medically-led organisations, which have responded to members suffering the distress of a claim, one offering an insurance-based indemnity and the other a mutual discretionary arrangement.
In light of the current inquiry into indemnity being undertaken at the Department of Health, under the auspices of the Chief Medical Office, surely the debate should focus on whether the existing arrangements are adequate for the 21st century, rather than which organisation provides the best support?
The issue is not about the past but about the future, with the threat of ...
