The Association of British Insurers needs to work harder to ensure it picks up emerging trends from across the sector, admitted Nick Starling, director of general insurance at the ABI.
Mr Starling explained the rationale behind the abolition of the ABI's Strategic Claims Committee, and insisted claims would still be represented on its sector-focused committees. He admitted that the ABI had struggled to look more than a year ahead in the past, and said it planned to tackle this, citing the appointment of Rebecca Driver, as director of research and chief economist, from the Bank of England as part of this strategy.
Mr Starling also provided an insight into his personal perspectives of the claims sector. Claims, he said, was not seen as the sexy side of the industry, losing out to underwriting, and was also bedevilled by anecdote. He compared its reputation to that of the NHS, with many people moaning about the state of the NHS but, when pressed, sharing positive experiences.
