A gang accused of organising staged accidents is being monitored, after it was found to have faked dozens of crashes that cost the industry millions of pounds.
The group's actions have alerted the attentions of law firm Keoghs, the Association of British Insurers, and a number of insurers - including Norwich Union. However, police have yet to bring any formal charges.
The gang is believed to have established a claims management company and a medico-legal agency, which cannot be named for legal reasons, to help it process claims. It is also believed to have a number of vehicle repair firms and engineers on side, to aid the fraud.
The group's methods are understood to have been copied by others, making the necessity to catch them even more vital, according to NU and Keoghs.
The crashes involve inducing innocent motorists to smash into the back of gang members, rather than members of the mob crashing into each other, which has been a feature of a number of staged accidents previously.
