Investigations into whether hospitals are divulging confidential patient information to claims management companies are under way.
The Department of Health has been alerted to potential abuses after several complaints from patients were made to the Claims Standards Council, which has demanded a government inquiry.
The All Party Parliamentary Group on Insurance and Financial Services has also warned that injured parties are having their details passed on to a third-party by A&E departments without consent.
Claims management companies then sell data to solicitors or cold-call patients directly. One claims firm has been advertising a list of 500 names at GBP6 each.
