KAOHSIUNG, Dec 1 Asia Pulse - The Taiwan Tuna Association asked the government Wednesday to buy back domestic fishing boats' whose operations are set to be affected by a sanction meted out by a world fishing organization.
The association demanded the government purchase the fishing boats that have been asked to halt operations or be dismantled after the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tuna (ICCAT) decided to slash its annual quota for Taiwan's bigeye tuna catch by about 70 per cent as a punishment over domestic fishing ships' overfishing on the high seas.
The government should buy back those fishing vessels at reasonable market prices according to their operating ages and fishery licenses, association officials said, arguing that they belong to the fishermen and that they should not just be mothballed without compensation.
