TOKYO, Dec 1 Asia Pulse - The 30th Taiwan-Japan Economic and Trade Conference opened in Tokyo Wednesday, attended by some 90 officials from the two countries.
Addressing the opening ceremony, Lo Fu-chen, president of the Association of East Asian Relations (AEAR) , called for Japan to accelerate economic and trade exchanges with Taiwan under the framework of the World Trade Organization and to render its support to Taiwan in the country's efforts to integrate into economic blocs throughout Asia.
Lo said that Taiwan is a worthy partner for Japan in terms of economic and trade cooperation. Citing recent reports by Switzerland's World Economic Forum, Lo said that Taiwan ranked fourth in the world in general growth competitiveness, while on the index of overall economic environment, it surged to ninth place from last year's 18th.
He called for the Japanese government to encourage more Japanese companies to invest in Taiwan or cooperate with Taiwanese businessmen to jointly crack third markets in China or Southeast Asia.
The quasi-official AEAR has been charged by Taiwan with dealing with Japan in the absence of diplomatic relations between Taipei and Tokyo since 1972.
