Nov. 28--On a small plot of ground next to a South Side wastewater plant, 25 varieties of grass are about to get roasted.

They'll battle through 60 days without water next summer.

The hardiest of the lot not only will have "survived" the drought, but will land on a list of the only approved grasses that builders in the city can plant at new residential and commercial construction beginning in 2007.

The grasses in the competition are seven St. Augustine varieties, eight Bermuda grasses, nine zoysia grasses and one buffalo grass.
