Nov. 27--You don't have to own an art gallery, run a museum or collect paintings to ride the crest of the Art Basel wave that will bring more than 40,000 people to Miami Beach this week.

You can be a student, restaurateur, diplomat, model, publisher or developer. No matter your schtick, everyone in South Florida, it seems, wants to cash in on one of the world's most prestigious modern art fairs by sponsoring an event, putting on a show or throwing a cocktail party.

Last year's fair prompted a host of builders to hold extravagant bashes to show off their gleaming condo projects and hopefully reel in some buyers. In 2005, the fourth year that the Switzerland-based fair has taken over the Miami Beach Convention Center, a potpourri of businesses and institutions are crossing their fingers that they'll catch some...
