The Canadian government got out of the energy business last year in the biggest public share offering in the country's history. On September 29 Ottawa sold the last of its shares--an 18.6 percent stake--in Petro-Canada, netting $2.5 billion. The 49 million shares were sold for $51.98 per share to institutional investors and retail account holders in Canada, the United States, and Europe.
