The White House: Conventional wisdom says a second term is typically marked by assorted blunders and avoidable setbacks. It appears, however, that President Bush will escape the usual plunge.
Few would have thought so just five days ago. Washington was thick with speculation that the White House was going to take a near-fatal hit from the prosecutor in the Valerie Plame probe. The criticism of Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers was swelling, with Bush absorbing many of the blows. Storm disasters loomed not far from the main ring in the media's circus coverage.
