Aspirin Myth
Cosmetic-surgery patients are routinely told to stop taking aspirinoor any medications containing itofor two weeks before surgery. Thatis because aspirin thins the blood, predisposing people to bleed more heavily and possibly hemorrhage during and after surgery. But a study in the Journal ?of the American College of Surgeons reported that aspirinis effects on bleeding lasted only six days after the most recent dose. Therefore, avoiding aspirin for more than six days before surgery is unnecessary,I dermatologist Allan Brett commented in Journal Watch Dermatology. The results were similar whether the intake of aspirin was 75 milligrams or 300 milligrams. ?Vitamin E also thins blood, and until more studies are done, doctors still advise avoiding it for two weeks prior to surgery.
