The early years:

1970 Company founded.

1973 First liner service (monthly) commenced between the Mediterranean and East Africa via Cape Town.

1977 Conventional container service starts between northern Europe and southern Africa.

1984 Fully containerized services employed to East Africa and South Africa.

1985-1990

1985 New transatlantic service begins between northern Europe and the U.S. East Coast (USEC); first MSC vessel, the Med Sun, calls at the Port of New York-New Jersey.

The Med Sun calls at the Port of Baltimore.

1986 MSC adds service to the Port of Boston with its vessel, the California Star.

1989 New services begin between South Africa and Australia, and between Australia and the west coast of South America.

MSC enters the cruise market when it acquires a 50 percent share of Lauro Cruise Lines.
