Automobiles are becoming increasingly laden with high-tech gadgetry, and this trend is probably most evident among luxury cars.
The five cars in this test group feature various devices such as voice-recognition controls, surround sound, pivoting headlights, navigation systems that display satellite-delivered traffic reports, pre-collision safety systems, and systems that alert the driver when the car strays from its lane. One of the tested vehicles even e-mails you with service appointment reminders.
And while some of these technologies are useful, we found many to be befuddling.
We tested the Infiniti M35, Audi A6, Cadillac STS, Acura RL, and Lexus GS300. Because two of the vehicles, the RL and A6, come with standard all-wheel drive (the A6 will offer front-wheel drive for 2006), we opted for the same on the Infiniti M35 and Lexus GS300. The Cadillac STS fitted with a V6 engine comes in only rear-wheel drive (AWD is optional with the V8). The V6 version will offer AWD for 2006.
The cars in our group come with standard features such as side-curtain head-protection air bags, electronic stability control, and strong V6 engines, along with five- and six-speed automatic transmissions. Trimmed in leather and wood, each sedan offers a variety of features that can include air-conditioned seats and heated steering wheels. As equipped, each was priced at roughly $50,000.
The surprise of this test group is the M35, which is now our top-rated sedan. It even outscores all of our tested full-size premium luxury sedans. This well-rounded car has a ride and handling suited for twisty roads as well as the boulevard. The M35's powerful V6 engine feels like a V8, and the roomy interior is well-finished, a step up from some recent Infiniti vehicles. Unlike some competitor's controls, the M35's are mostly user-friendly, particularly the voice-recognition system.
The A6 is capable and pampering. The 255-hp V6 is smooth and delivers ample performance and good fuel economy for an AWD sedan of such weight. The taut suspension delivers agility and a comfortable ride. The high-quality materials fit together well, but the cabin details are no more impressive than in the Infiniti, Acura, and Lexus. The Multi-Media Interface (MMI) driver-interaction system is a major distraction and nearly as confusing as BMW's iDrive system.
