Millions of children and teenagers returning to school should be inoculated with a new, potentially longer-lasting meningitis vaccine, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced in May. Meningitis, which often begins with flulike symptoms, afflicts up to 3,000 Americans each year, and up to 300 die. About ]5 percent are left with permanent disabilities. Experts expect the new shot to provide longer protection than the older one, which worked for three to five years.
