When a city takes Best Overall Community Commitment to Aquatics, even the resident dogs have something to howl about. At the Oak Point Center Pool, man's best friend is invited for a swim session of its own in the annual K-9 Kerplunk event.
In its first year, a crowd of 100 people and dogs, as well as the local media, showed up for some doggie paddling--some in four-legged swimsuits. The local animal shelter held dog adoptions on site. In addition, the city offers pet CPR and First Aid, classes so popular, it can't offer enough.
Of course, human patrons can swim at any of the city's five facilities. Their popularity is evident by the residential support for renovations and new pools:
Most recently, voters approved a $6 million expansion on one facility to include an indoor pool designed to accommodate senior citizen exercise, lessons and family swimming. They also voted to purchase an existing private recreation center in 2003, and approved another $9.6 million on renovations and the building of a new indoor pool and leisure center in 2001.
