Some equate swimming with a religious experience. And at the Capital District YMCA in Guilderland, N.Y., it can be. At least once a month, one of its facilities offers its hot tub to local churches as a place for baptisms as part of its involvement with the community.
The 10-branch YMCA, which draws swimming populations from the Albany region, offers a range of aquatics programming targeted at the diverse community.
For instance, for its yearly SPLASH learn-to-swim campaign, the facility offers five days of free lessons during the school spring break, underwritten by different organizations (this year the local newspaper stepped up). Due to a strong marketing campaign, the event went from close to no participation to more than 2,000 students in one year.
The Y also offers a unique backyard swimming program: It sends instructors to teach students in their own homes. What's more, it does a collaborative effort with local schools, churches, home-school students and different agencies to bring swimming into their lives.
