Maybe they should call it Swim City. With seven facilities and a diverse list of programming, Las Vegas has brought swimming to the forefront of recreation for its residents. Even Vegas' famous strip has found its way to the ever-popular aquatics community, with shows such as Cirque du Soleil's "O," the Calgary Aquabelles, the Silverton Hotel Underwater Dancers and Dragone using the local pools as training sites. The aquatics program's connection to the synchronized swimming community has made way for future water ballerinas through the city's six synchronized swimming programs.
At the request of its residents, the city completely rebuilt or constructed new state-of-the-art facilities beginning in 1999. With the venues came numerous athletic or aerobic classes, water-wellness classes and a strict lifeguard training process.
For those with more game than grace, the city offers water polo, competitive swimming and kayaking classes. And in a city where drowning is no gamble, the aquatics professionals promote water safety awareness heavily year 'round.
