I am sure both the cover story on toddler drowning and the editorial in the June issue set off quite a firestorm.
It is a subject I have spent my life researching, both anecdotally and scientifically. First let me say, there is research--quite a bit of it--and scientifically sound research at that. Some is directly on point and some gives us peripheral evidence on the capabilities of children to learn swimming skills and retain safety information at very young ages.
I do agree with you, though, that there is a tragic need for studies targeting the question head on. I can give your readers a succinct reason why research is not yet forthcoming even though there are many people in the fight to prevent the unnecessary death of even one more child: money.
