HAVANA _ The Cuban government announced huge hikes in electricity fees for the island's heaviest consumers Wednesday, moving to soften economic disparities and conserve energy.
Posting the tariff increases on the front pages of Cuba's state-run newspapers, President Fidel Castro said heavy consumption had pushed up world prices on fossil fuels. The government cast the new rates as power-saving measures to counteract "the policy of absurd expenditures by consumer societies."
