President Kennedy once sent a pair of underlings to Vietnam and asked them to report back. Their descriptions of the progress of the war were so at odds that Kennedy asked, "Did you two gentlemen visit the same country?" That's what Iraq feels like today. As the consensus for staying the course breaks apart with stunning speed, the war itself seems to be taking place on Mars. All the back-and-forth about John Murtha as Michael Moore and Dick Cheney's five student deferments and booing on the House floor (after an egregiously dopey freshman Republican called war hero Murtha a "coward") is fun for the press, but it's getting in the way of figuring out what to do next.
