Using a question asked since 1977 by Los Angeles Times pollsters, Steven Tuch and Ronald Weitzer * looked at opinions about the LAPD after three incidents of alleged police brutality (1979, 1991, and 1996). The Times has continued to ask the identical question, and the full trend is shown below. Approval of the L.A. police dropped among whites, blacks, and Latinos after each incident, but after a time, ratings rebounded. A majority of blacks in L.A. (53 percent) say incidents of police brutality are very common. Eight percent of whites, and a third of Hispanics there agree.
