Think conservatives are an endangered species at UC-Berkeley? Think again. In 1999, the Berkeley College Republicans, or "BCR" as they call themselves, consisted of about a dozen members. Today, the organization numbers more than 580 and growing.
The club isn't content to merely host conservative speakers (who would otherwise have no chance of being welcomed to such hostile territory). Its members also make their voices heard directly. In 2001, in response to National Coming Out Day, BCR hosted a "Conservative Coming Out Day." In March 2003, the group held a famous "Affirmative Action Bake Sale" where goodies were sold at prices based on the buyer's gender and race. Members armed with flyers and facts were prepared for the controversy that ensued.
