Commercial real estate can't escape the Tampa Bay area's water woes

This spring, as always, baseball fans won't relish hearing the words "rain delay" at Tampa Bay area spring training camps.

But rain is what the area needs -- and not the kind of rain that simply gets the dust off cars but enough to refill all of the Bay area's water sources and meet continuing demands from local taps.

Developers usually would not concern themselves with rainfall -- except when it causes construction delays. But now they recognize that the continuing drought can affect development now and in the future.

The local chapter of the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties has formed a task force to address the water issue from several fronts -- simple conservation measures to support for additional water, sources.

"We want to proceed cautiously, and we want to make sure everyone has the facts, including ourselves," said Julia Rettig, president of the 8,000-member NAIOP Tampa...
