Flip Saunders, Pistons: putting in a zone defense
Under Larry Brown, the Pistons played the league's best man-to-man defense. Saunders, however, likes to use zones as much as any coach in the league, especially early in the season. He has had the Pistons working on a 2-3 matchup, where the long arms of Rasheed Wallace and Tayshaun Prince can block off passing lanes and Ben Wallace can clog the middle.
The players prefer man-to-man, but they're fine with mixing in zones because they think it helps on offense. "One thing about a zone is that nobody really works on playing against a zone," Chauncey Billups told reporters. "Now, when you get the rebound, they're trying to match up. They don't know where to go and where to run."
Take 1: Saunders will use a zone enough for it to be effective, but the Pistons will remain a man-to-man team.
