CHICAGO BEARS
With the exception of one bad half in the opener against Redskins RB Clinton Portis, the run defense has been stout. The key has been gap control, which was an issue last season. DT Ian Scott, the Bears' most consistent and disciplined player, has been a positive influence on the rest of the linemen.... Moving Mike Brown from free to strong safety made sense because he always had played well in the box and he's a strung tackler. Although a bit undersized (5-10, 207), he is physical at the point of attack and will take on blockers. The move also was wise because Brown struggles when in man coverage and lacks recovery speed. OFFENSIVE SYSTEM CHECK: RB Thomas Jones has been a better fit between the tackles than expected for coordinator Ron Turner's scheme. But the Bears need to work in rookie RB Cedric Benson Jones doesn't wear down. Teams have keyed on WR Muhsin Muhammad because rookie QB Kyle Orlon has struggled to develop a complementary target. Orton needs to start making more plays.--Brad Biggs
DETROIT LIONS
Replacing QB Joey Harrington with Jeff Garola provided an obvious boost to the struggling offense. Garcia's confidence and willingness to take risks spark the team Garcia will be the starter as long as he stays healthy.... The Lions have three first-round picks at wide receiver, and one of them must fulfill his potential with WR Kevln Johnson (Achilles'), the team's most dependable option, out for the season. Rookie Mike Williams has made some plays over the middle and could be the one who steps up, but his playing time will be reduced if he doesn't stop fumbling. OFFENSIVE SYSTEM CHECK: The team has struggled to pick up blitzes because the linemen hove lost one-on-one battles, the tight ends and backs have blown assignments and the coaches haven't designed effective schemes. The team needs to install more three-step drops to allow the quarterback to throw the ball quickly, and the receivers need to do a better job recognizing coverages. But there aren't any quick fixes-only repetition and experience will solve the problem.--Tom Kowalski
