DENVER BRONCOS
QB Jake Plummer is making better decisions with the ball and playing more within the scheme. The Broncos have led most of their games, which allows them to stay with a run-first philosophy that mixes in play-action bootlegs and rollouts. Plummer also is doing a better job of spreading the ball around rather than locking onto WR Rod Smith.... FB Kyle Johnson has improved his receiving enough to make teams pay for ignoring him in the red zone; he has three TD receptions this season. Johnson excels at feigning a block, then slipping into the flat on quick out routes. OFFENSIVE SYSTEM CHECK: The Broncos have gone to a two-back rushing attack with Mike Anderson and Tatum Bell, and the running game has continued to power the offense. Bell's speed also has added a spark. The biggest problem is converting third downs. The offense has converted only 29.3 percent of third downs, mainly because it has had too many third-and-long situations.--Lee Rasizer
KANSAS CITY CHIEFS
DE Eric Hicks is having a solid season. Hicks has good technique and is a hard worker, and his effort puts him in position to make plays. He can be overwhelmed at the point of attack and won't record a lot of sacks, but his consistency is valuable.... K Lawrence Tynes struggled early partially because he was unfamiliar with his holder, rookie P Dustin Colquitt. But the team was patient, and Tynes' performance has improved as he and Colquitt have developed chemistry. Tynes kicked two field goals of more than 50 yards in the win over the Dolphins and is 12-of-14 for the season. OFFENSIVE SYSTEM CHECK: Early in the season, poor protection bogged down the passing game and limited TE Tony Gonazlez's impact, but the blocking has improved, and the passing game appeared to be back on track in the victory over the Dolphins. The rotation of RBs Priest Holmes and Larry Johnson has been effective, but the team should consider using the hot runner a little more rather than being concerned with whose turn it is to get a carry.--Adam Teicher
