This has been a strange year in Indianapolis. The defense has been superb while Peyton Manning has been something less than that. Mortal, I suppose.
Manning was out-of-this-world good last season, when he threw a league-record 49 touchdown passes. He had 22 (along with 2,161 yards) through seven games in 2004 but has only 11 (and 1,551 yards) in that same span this season. Six quarterbacks have passed for more scores than Manning, including his little brother.
So, Peyton has been asked repeatedly: What's wrong?.
I'll tell you what's wrong: not a blessed thing. He's playing very well, and the Colts are undefeated. Nothing else matters.
This is a different team than it was a year ago. Because the defense is so much better, the Colts are running the ball more and passing it less. It just makes sense. And Manning is perfectly fine with that. He grins just as much after an Edgerrin James touchdown run as he does after connecting with Marvin Harrison in the end zone. You don't hear Manning whining about being handcuffed by the team's more conservative approach. If anything, he appears to be enjoying himself more than he was a year ago. Winning ...
