Q: A friend told me that her son was taking the Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme, and that my son should too. In what way is this programme different from the normal Leaving Certificate programme?
A: The Leaving Certificate Vocational programme (LVCP) is described as an intervention programme which is designed to enhance the vocational dimension of the established Leaving Certificate programme, with which we are all familiar.
More than 500 second-level schools now offer the LCVP programme in their two-year Leaving Certificate cycle. Students taking the LCVP must take five established Leaving Certificate subjects, and many of them will take six or even seven subjects.
In addition, they will take two link modules, Preparation for the World of Work, and Enterprise Education. Their established Leaving Certificate subjects must include Irish, and at least two subjects from designated vocational subject groupings, as well as a recognised course in a modern European language.
