It takes hard work and a lot of perseverence, but it is still possible in these enlightened times to bring up respectful, well-behaved kids. Conor Feehan reports

'Spare the rod, spoil the child' is an expression which sends a chill down the spine of modern-day mammies and daddies, now that we rightfully live in the less punishing era of negotiation and incentive when it comes to getting our kids to behave.

And we now spend our time negotiating and bargaining with toddlers in the same way we conduct transactions in the adult world.

But is all this softly softly approach turning our children into spoilt horrors? And is there room for a bit of bad cop in a world where the good cop has had the recent glow of spotlight in society?

The fun begins around the time your little beloved reaches the age of 18 ...
