Still on the thorny issue of transport, I couldn't help thinking on a recent visit to America that Disney and Universal can build state-of-the-art rollercoaster rides, mind-boggling feats of engineering that you fear will be life-threatening but that somehow hurl you around the place safely. They get built, they work brilliantly and everyone has fun.

In Dublin, we can't build a single 5km tunnel without sections that leak, or without going way over-deadline and even further over-budget.

Barcelona, another city with a big reputation, began operating a new tram system in the past year or two. Again, it got built and it works. No big fuss, no big story to report.

Here, we're still clapping ourselves on the back for a two-line ...
