(From Irish Independent)
A NEW model of economic growth will have to be developed before the planet is destroyed, according to one of the three short-listed candidates for secretary-general of the OECD.
Japanese academic and businesswoman Sawako Takeuchi was in Dublin as part of her campaign for the top job at the 30-nation organisation. Her rivals are a former prime minister of Poland and a former finance minister of Mexico.
Both would be regarded as developing countries, whereas Japan has been a member of the OECD since 1964. Dr Takeuchi would be the first Japanese secretary-general as well as the first female.
"I am not a candidate for Japan, and I am not a politician," she says. But Japan has always been a strong supporter of multinational organisations.
It has also been the biggest contributor to development assistance for the past ten years.
"I do think the OECD would be showing leadership if it chose a woman for the post. But I am standing on my expertise in public policy and human development in both Japan and Europe."
