IRISH customers of O2 will not be affected by the acquisition of the company by Spanish telecoms giant Telefonica, according to the boss of O2 in Ireland.
Speaking in the wake of the announcement of Telefonica's 26bn bid yesterday chief executive of the Irish arm of O2 Danuta Gray said the brand name O2 will be retained and that there will be no immediate impact on the group's 1.5m Irish customers.
She said that as the "market dynamics" tended to be set country by country, there is unlikely to be any immediate drop in customer bills.
However, she added that by becoming part of a much larger group - the merged business will be second only to Vodafone in the global mobile business - there could be benefits in the form of cheaper hand-sets.
