Penn State's women's basketball coach, Rene Portland, allegedly kicked star player Jennifer Harris off the team earlier this year as a suspected lesbian, according to the National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR).
While Harris set records playing for the Lady Lions from 2003 to 2005, Portland repeatedly questioned her about her sexual orientation and threatened to kick her off of the team if she was found to be a lesbian. Portland also told other players not to associate with Harris because she was gay.
Portland has had issues with lesbians for decades, creating a stir in 1986 after she told the Chicago Sun Times that she would not allow lesbians on her team, according to an October 11, 2005 press release from the NCLR. The Center also called on Penn State President Graham Spanier to take action against Coach Portland for harassment and discrimination against Harris based on her race, gender and perceived sexual orientation.
