THE FLOWER of New South Wales, according to Melvyn Bragg, is the "w'ratter". Australia s national dictionary, which he thoroughly recommends, is the "McCarry". The program was a series called The Adventure of English and it is a very accessible and scholarly piece of work about the birth and development of the English language--until his lordship deals with Australia.
