SARASOTA COUNTY -- Local civic and business leaders want to rally taxpayers to demand elected officials stop cutting funds earmarked for low-cost housing.

Since 2003, the state Legislature has siphoned money from an affordable housing trust fund for the state's general fund. The money comes from a tax on real estate transactions that developers and agents agreed not to oppose, on the condition that the money go to affordable housing.
