Longer-lasting wrinkle filling may ?be possible with injections of pig collagen. Approved in Europe last October, the filler Evolence is said ?to last in soft tissue for up to one year, which is four times as long as the FDA-approved collagen fillers, Zyplast and Cosmoderm. Zyplast, derived from cows, requires allergy testing; Cosmoderm, a purified human collagen, does not. Because porcine tissue is used in other medical devices, its allergy risk is known to ?be negligible. An upcoming trial ?will compare the duration and side effects of Evolence and Restylane (a hyaluronic-acid filler that lasts up to six months). If Evolence proves safe, FDA approval could come by 2007.

Liposuction seems like an easy route to weight loss, but thatis not necessarily the case. Among 209 patients tracked for five years by doctors at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, 43 percent actually gained weight after the surgery.
