ome theorists and historians have noted that hair, owing to its placement on the head, is associated with knowledge. That must explain why certain styles are works of pure genius and others are simply clueless.

So what exactly separates the gifted from the flawed? Perhaps the fact that all the greatest looks are more than the sum of their parts-a layer here, a fringe there. Truly transcendent styles have loftier aspirations than the humble haircut. They not only flatter us on the outside, but also suggest who we are at heart-be it sexy, resilient, vulnerable, feisty.
