Insiders' Guide Total MAkeover

Kate Schmidt, 24, interior-design coordinator

HAIR HISTORY: "I started layering my hair when Rachel on Friends did," Schmidt says. "I towel-dry, comb it, run out the door, and by 10:30 a.m. it's in a clip."

GARREN'S STRATEGY: "Kate has very fine, curly hair, and she just tucks it behind her ears," Garren says. "Her light brown hair was a little drab, so colorist Christopher John added subtle highlights. We kept the length but cut more layers and side fringe into it to create a messy shag. We blew it dry at the salon, but if she puts a light volumizing spray in it and lets it air-dry, it will have a nice shaggy shape."

SCHMIDT'S REACTION: "My hair looked fantastic blown out, but I usually have to wash it and go. With a little styling product,

I can do that, and it still looks good. And the color makes my skin look brighter."
